A maioria dos PCs v\u00eam com uma interface Ethernet 10\/100 para uso de casa, n\u00e3o s\u00f3 criar uma rede dom\u00e9stica, mas conectar \u00e0 Internet atrav\u00e9s de uma conex\u00e3o DSL ou modem de cabo. Uma porta 10\/100 significa que ela suporta tanto conex\u00f5es 10BaseT de 10Mbps como conex\u00e3o de 100Mbps.<\/p>\n<p>Ethernet normalmente \u00e9 uma LAN de m\u00eddia compartilhada. Todas as esta\u00e7\u00f5es de um segmento compartilham a banda.<\/p>\n<p>O par tran\u00e7ado (10BaseT) usa a instala\u00e7\u00e3o econ\u00f4mica de telefone com conectores padr\u00e3o RJ-45, desta forma \u00e9 poss\u00edvel utilizar. As conex\u00f5es s\u00e3o do tipo estrela e requerem um hub ou switch. O Fast Ethernet (100BaseT) \u00e9 semelhante, mas usa dois pares tran\u00e7adas diferentes. Atualmente os adaptares Ethernet, hubs e switches suportam os padr\u00f5es 10BaseT e 100BaseT (10\/100) e reconhecem automaticamente a taxa de transmiss\u00e3o. As primeiras vers\u00f5es de Ethernet de 10Mbps usavam cabo de coaxial.<\/p>\n<p>A Ethernet por fibra \u00f3tica (10BaseF e 100BaseFX) \u00e9 imune a radia\u00e7\u00e3o externa e \u00e9 usado freq\u00fcentemente para estender segmentos de Ethernet at\u00e9 aproximadamente 2 quil\u00f4metros. As especifica\u00e7\u00f5es s\u00e3o para a forma\u00e7\u00e3o de backbones.<\/p>\n<p>A Ethernet transmite frames de tamanhos vari\u00e1veis entre 72 e 1518 bytes de comprimento, cada frame cont\u00e9m um cabe\u00e7alho com os endere\u00e7os das esta\u00e7\u00f5es de origem e destino e um campo para a corre\u00e7\u00e3o de erros.\u00a0 Protocolos de alto-n\u00edvel, como IP e IPX, fragmentam mensagens longas no tamanho em frames requerido pela rede de Ethernet.<\/p>\n<p>A Ethernet usa a tecnologia de CSMA\/CD para transmitir os frames sobre o m\u00e9dio f\u00edsico (par tran\u00e7ado, fibra, etc.). Todas as esta\u00e7\u00f5es conectadas \u00e0 Ethernet est\u00e3o escutando a linha e quando uma esta\u00e7\u00e3o reconhece o seu endere\u00e7o de destino, ela aceita o frame e faz a verifica\u00e7\u00e3o de erros.
