O enfoque inicial \u00e9 o acesso \u00e0 Internet de alta velocidade sem fio a partir das casas e das empresas, sem a utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o do sistema de telefonia.<\/p>\n<p>Tipicamente as redes metropolitanas tem uma cobertura de algumas dezenas de Km<sup>2<\/sup> e dist\u00e2ncias de menos de 100Km. Essas redes tamb\u00e9m trabalham tipicamente em ambientes urbanos. Isso traz algumas dificuldades para uma rede sem fio, que tipicamente necessita de visada direta para trabalhar. Assim uma rede sem fio para \u00e1rea metropolitana deve ser capaz de trabalhar, de alguma maneira, sem a necessidade de visada (por exemplo, o sinal refletido em outros edif\u00edcios devem ser o suficiente para que o receptor recupere o sinal transmitido).<\/p>\n<p>Neste mesmo caminho o IEEE est\u00e1 buscando um padr\u00e3o para redes metropolitanas. Essa padr\u00e3o ser\u00e1 conhecido como IEEE 802.16, batizado de WIMAX.
